Where the Signal Arises and Where It Fades Again

Calcium: A Hundred Nanomoles Inside

In the cell fluid of a resting cell, free calcium sits in the order of a hundred nanomoles per liter. Outside the cell, and inside its internal membrane store, there is roughly ten thousand times as much. That difference does not hold by itself: pumps in both membranes carry the ion back against the gradient and use energy doing it.

The Store Moves Toward the Division Plane

Ahead of a division, the inner membrane network of the cell arranges itself anew. The cell-biology literature describes parts of it gathering close to the spindle poles, that is, at the place where the apparatus for parcelling out the genetic material is put together. The reserve thereby moves to the spot where a brief signal is called for.

Made Visible by a Glowing Protein

A protein from the jellyfish Aequorea victoria gives off blue light the moment calcium binds to it. Injected into large egg cells, it turned short peaks of concentration into a trail of light that can be followed on film. The oldest pictures of this process come from there.

A Receiver With Four Pockets

A small protein by the name of calmodulin carries four binding places for the ion. Once they are occupied, the molecule folds into a different shape and hands that shape on to further proteins. A rise in concentration becomes, along this route, a chain of changes of state. Not one of these names occurs in the official sentence.

A Signal That Shuts Itself Down Again

With most nutrients the question comes down to an amount: how much is there, how much comes in, how much stays behind. For the process described here that question does not carry far. What counts is the moment at which the concentration changes, and the pace at which it drops back to its resting value afterward.

Pumps That Are Busiest While Nothing Happens

As long as nothing occurs, the pumps run without a break. They draw calcium out of the cell fluid — outward and into the inner store — and hold the low inside value within a narrow band. Only this costly resting state makes the short rise readable at all. Without the quiet there is no signal.

Seconds, Not Hours

The recorded peaks last seconds, and in some cell types fractions of one. After that the resting value is back in place and the next rise becomes possible. A process of that length cannot be read off a single meal, and one measurement at a single moment does not render the course of it.

One Ion, Several Rhythms

In cell cultures the rises are described as differing in height, in length and in the interval between them, and downstream proteins as answering different patterns differently. One and the same substance can in this way carry more than one piece of information. That explains the scientific interest, yet taken on its own it says nothing about a food.
